We are so excited to have you guys with us today on November 28th, and we are excited just talk about like, why are we even celebrating Advent? Why do we go through all of this work? Why do we dedicate so much time to this? But before we dig into that, I'm gonna introduce you to our special guests. What is your first name? Colton. And what grade are you in? Colton? Speaker 3 00:00:58 Sixth Speaker 2 00:00:59 Grade. And what is your favorite thing about sixth grade so far? Speaker 3 00:01:03 Math Speaker 2 00:01:05 Man. We have so many math whis in village kids. I'm so excited for you guys to listen to all their answers over the season cuz um, you guys are doing something different than what's in my heart and loving math. I love it. And so, Colton, before we jump into our subject, I just wanna hear a little bit about you. What are you looking forward to most about Christmas this year? Speaker 3 00:01:25 I'm looking forward to listening to Christmas songs. Before you, wait, no. After Thanksgiving? Speaker 2 00:01:33 Mm-hmm. <affirmative>. Okay. Do you, do you wait for after Thanksgiving Speaker 3 00:01:35 Too? Yeah, I Speaker 2 00:01:37 Do. Because your mom is not okay. And she listens to them sometimes. Before Thanksgiving. Speaker 3 00:01:42 My sister was listening to Christmas songs about two weeks ago. Speaker 2 00:01:46 No, Colton, this is so stressful. Do you know that your mom and I have a continual debate as to, um, what is the, what is the right thing? So, um, I'm glad that you're on my team Colton, and I'm going to, um, keep you on my team forever. Okay. And so, but by the time that this podcast is really totally safe territory to be listening to Christmas music and we hope that everyone is enjoying it so much. Do you have a favorite Christmas song? Speaker 3 00:02:10 I like, I forgot what it's called. Speaker 2 00:02:14 What are some of the words? Speaker 3 00:02:16 Um, oh, is it? God bless the Married, married gentleman. Speaker 2 00:02:20 Yeah. Good job. God bless the married gentleman. That's a good one. I love that. That's your favorite. That's pretty fun. All right. And so we're talking about the adventure of Christmas this season on the podcast. And so we are looking at all of the journey, um, that people had to go on in that first Christmas story. How many things they came across, how many risks they had to take. And so for you, I would love to hear from you, what is a favorite adventure that you have been on Speaker 3 00:02:46 About two years ago, my family and I went on a trip to Utah. Mm-hmm. <affirmative>. We went to Artis National Park. We got in free because I was in fourth grade. Mm-hmm. Speaker 2 00:02:59 <laugh>, you, you got your whole family a sweet deal. Yeah. Speaker 3 00:03:02 Yeah. And then we had a really fun time and I would go back, Speaker 2 00:03:07 Oh, I love arches, right? Mm-hmm. <affirmative>, it's just like some really crazy landscape, right? That you're like, wow, Lord, you are so creative. One of the things too is like the color of the dirt, everything is just astounding. So I agree. Yeah. It just always creates to me like a sense of wonder and awe of, oh my word. Jesus. You're such a creative creator so much to learn about him. And so when you go on these kind of adventures, what is one thing you like most about adventures? Speaker 3 00:03:32 The thing I like most about adventures is first of all, you get to share them with friends and family. Mm-hmm. <affirmative>. Second of all, it's exciting and it's never boring. Mm-hmm. <affirmative>, you never feel like you regret going on it. Mm-hmm. <affirmative>. Mm-hmm. <affirmative> because you always love every second of Speaker 2 00:03:54 It. That's right. I feel very similar most of the time too. Mm-hmm. <affirmative> so good to just get out and try new things. And so what do you like least about adventures though? Like when you go on these adventures, what do you like? Well, that part. Anything. What do you think? Speaker 3 00:04:09 Um, what I like least about adventures is that when you go on adventure, you never really know what to expect. That's Speaker 2 00:04:20 True. That's kinda like part of the fun part and then part of the part where you're like, and sometimes it doesn't work out in our favor, does it? Yeah. Yeah. That's super true. All right, so today we are talking about why do we celebrate Advent? And so we kind of put a lot of effort here into Village Kids for like celebrating Advent and for five six. And so I would love to hear from you, Colton, what are some of your thoughts? Why do we celebrate Advent? Speaker 3 00:04:47 Well, we celebrate Advent. I think one of the reasons is to practice patience. Mm-hmm. <affirmative>, because like a lot of the times you just can't wait for Christmas and like you're in Advent and you're like, oh, I'm so bored. Can't we just have Christmas already? Mm-hmm. <affirmative>. And so it's a good time to practice patience. Speaker 2 00:05:08 Mm-hmm. <affirmative>. That's so good. You're like, actually sometimes there's like beauty in the waiting, right? Mm-hmm. <affirmative> and the preparation in the preparing mm-hmm. <affirmative>. That's so good. What else? Any other ways that you think are things you think are important for practicing Advent? Speaker 3 00:05:22 Um, it helps you focus on Jesus instead of the things that you're gonna get or the things you're gonna do. Speaker 2 00:05:30 Yep. Because he's the whole purpose, right? Mm-hmm. <affirmative>. And so I think you're exactly onto something there that sometimes it can be pretty easy to just start to focus on these things that are not, they're like extra fun things, right? Mm-hmm. <affirmative> to the Christmas season, but they're not the point. Mm-hmm. <affirmative>. And so my hope in Advent, particularly for our village kids and for our five six is that exactly, just like you said, we are taking ourselves out of the center of the Christmas season and we are putting, putting Jesus in the center of the Christmas season. And we are absolutely being reminded that God has a plan for everything that he's doing. And sometimes it is a beautiful encouragement to our heart to watch some of the plans that he's already orchestrated in the past to see how wise and see how creative and see how powerful he is to make those things happen. Speaker 2 00:06:18 I think it's also really important to celebrate Advent because it reminds us that there are generations of people who were longing for the Messiah and they were just sitting there waiting, right? We're gonna talk about this 400 year period of silence and how they just waited and they didn't know when the Messiah, when the Savior was coming. And if we can kind of imagine ourselves in this kind of expectation at Christmas that we're like preparing for something, we're waiting for something, it allows us to see how Jesus entered into their stories and made the biggest difference. Not that they had a savior to be able to have. I think also sometimes for me, I can tend to be like, there's so much going on at Christmas, right? Like, there's Christmas concerts and you have Christmas homework and you get to make Christmas cookies and so many fun, lots of fun things, right? What's your favorite fun thing that you like to do at Christmas that's just kind of like different than normal? Speaker 3 00:07:11 I like making herring salad. Speaker 2 00:07:13 That's, that's, that's so gross. I don't even know what to say to that on the podcast. <laugh>. So you're learning to make it though. Speaker 3 00:07:20 My uncle comes over mm-hmm. <affirmative> and me, my uncle and my grandpa. Mm-hmm. <affirmative> we're like the only ones that like Hering salad. It's a German salad. Oh, Speaker 2 00:07:30 I know what it is. But tell our listeners it's a German salad made out of Speaker 3 00:07:33 Hering rat fish, by the way. Yeah. Hering radishes, apples a lot of other stuff that I can't Speaker 2 00:07:42 Remember. That's fun. Those are the main ingredients. I think our Yeah. Listeners can get a creative idea of what that might taste like. Yeah. In their, um, mouth. And so it, it's not for everyone, right? No. It's not a taste for everyone. Um, but it's a tradition in your family to kind of teach One generation teaches the next generation, teaches a next generation how to, but I'm glad that you actually like it. So if you're going, do you like love it or you're like, no, I like it, Speaker 3 00:08:04 I love Speaker 2 00:08:05 It. Oh my goodness. Golden. You're my favorite. Uh, alright. Um, someday I'm gonna be a big girl and I'm gonna try a bite of the hearing salad, but so far I have not been able to get myself to be able to try it. If any of our other listeners are in love with hearing salad, you can write into us and let us know your thoughts on it too. But that's a great example of something that's just like a really fun thing, right? But it's not the point of everything that we're doing. And so it's very good for us to be demonstrating and cultivating, like you said, this patience, um, of being kind of like discontent with what's going on, knowing something else is better that's coming and that we're moving towards that and looking for the promises of God in the midst of that. And so we're very excited just for our village kids to be practicing patients, to be looking at preparing their hearts and their homes for Christ's birth in a world, um, in our world that's going on around us. Speaker 2 00:08:57 And just really reflecting on that. And so Advent began yesterday on November 27th, and we see that every Sunday there's a theme. And so we have the themes of hope, love, joy, and peace are the themes of the weeks leading up, leading up to Christmas Eve when we focus on Christ. And so we're just excited for everyone to be able to have set aside time, to just be inviting the Lord, to be working in their hearts and to be encouraging them. And so, Colton, I would love for you just read our passage today that's gonna encourage us to be able to do this Speaker 3 00:09:30 Second Peter one 19. And we have the prophetic word more fully confirmed to which you will do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in the, in a dark place until the day dawn's the morning star rises in your hearts. Speaker 2 00:09:47 And so this verse is really telling us, Hey, there was a time when all the people had was a prophecy, but we have the prophetic word now, it's complete in Jesus. And so our heart should pay attention to who he is, what he's doing, and what that has to do with us. And so my hope that this advent season is that our village kids in five six are gonna do just that. They're gonna pay attention to who Jesus is, how he came, the way that God orchestrated this adventure, this story of bringing him into the world and what that means for us today. And so, Colton, would you just close us in prayer? Speaker 3 00:10:24 Uh, yeah. Dear God, thank you for, um, sending your son Jesus to um, the earth and, uh, saving us all from our sins and forgiving us and even when we don't deserve forgiveness. Um, thank you that we could do this Advent podcast and learn about you. Thank you that we could have this time to celebrate and get away from all of our busyness and work and school and just have some time together. And amen. Speaker 2 00:11:15 And thank you for hearing solid. Amen. Speaker 3 00:11:18 <laugh>, Speaker 2 00:11:18 Can you close our podcast out today, Colton, and just wish our listeners and Merry Christmas. Merry Christmas. All right. We'll see you guys back here again tomorrow.
